Rameswaram and Dhanuskodi

Danuskodi road
We started from Pondicherry on 25th December 2017 making memories and two souls on two wheels chasing for our next adventure. The ride was over 500kms, which took us 10hours and riding on the East Coast road and NH38 was quite a thrill in itself. We travelled through beautiful towns and this journey was indeed the most memorable and spectacular one covering Villupuram, Srirangam, Tiruchirapally, Karaikudi, Devipattinam, Mandapam and then finally the island of Pamban - Rameswaram and Dhanuskodi.

The weather was perfect though out the day and we had a quick break breakfast at Café Coffee Day since most of the places were shut either it was too early or the shops did not open due to the celebrations. While I was reconfirming the route on Google maps, I discovered that the city of Trichy or Tiruchirapally has a river island called Srirangam, which is bounded by the Kaveri and Kollidam rivers. By the time we reached Devakottai it was noon and we had the most remarkable lunch at Karaikudi restaurant, a non-vegetarian’s haven. I must say that this place has the yummiest organ meat. We took a detour post Devipattinam and found this vast expanse of saltpan, backwaters and beautiful palm trees lined barren road.

Then came the stunning Pamban Road Bridge running parallel to the oldest railway sea bridge, the endless turquoise blue ocean on both sides makes the ride surreal. We quickly checked in to the hotel and headed to Dhanuskodi, which is about 20kms from Rameswaram before the sunset. This ride indeed fits the word – supercalifragilisticexpialidocious as you travel through the narrowest road with the ocean just few feet away on both sides. As we reached Dhanuskodi, we saw how nature’s fury can change the game and the ruins from once a flourishing town still remains. The place is now inhabitable and it was quite saddening to be at a dead altar of a church on Christmas. We took a stroll in the evening around the ancient Ramanathaswamy temple and could capture its beautiful pillars just for a few seconds. The place is filled with prigrims across the country and had a light dinner before we called it a day.
